Before you start

• Make sure that the floor is clean; sweep and dust-mop thoroughly to ensure that there is no residual dirt and debris that can get in the way. • Mix a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water in equal parts in a spray bottle. White vinegar can also be used as a substitute for hydrogen peroxide. Spray the area with the solution and let soak for at least 15 minutes. It may be quicker to work in small areas; spray another area while you're cleaning the area that has already soaked. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the area clean of debris and rinse the area with clean water. Use a towel to dry the area and clean up any residual dirt and debris.
  
  Bleach is very useful when it comes to cleaning grout, but be sure not to use it on colored grout or if you have colored tiles as it may fade them. Mix it with water in equal parts and saturate the grout. In three to five minutes you can use the toothbrush to gently scrub away the dirt. If for you have mold in the grout, bleach is the best thing to use. Rinse the grout with clean water and use a clean dry towel to dry the area.
  
  If you have a steam cleaner, steam is the best natural way to clean grout. Hold the attachment of the steam cleaner to the grout for 10 to 15 seconds to loosen the dirt and grime before scrubbing it away with an old toothbrush. Clean up the area with a clean damp cloth.

• Applying a grout sealer can help to make your grout easier to clean in the future and protect it. If your grout gets damaged, bacteria can accumulate underneath, creating an unsanitary and unsafe situation for your home. Check your local home improvement store for grout sealer and follow the directions on the label.
  
  For grout that just won't come clean, you can hire a professional to come in and handle it. This can be costly, but if the situation is bad enough it may be worth it.
