How Do I Clean Soap Stone?
- For light cleaning, simply use dish soap and warm water with a non-abrasive sponge. Rinse and dry with a dishcloth or paper towels. When dry, use a soft cloth to apply a light coat of mineral oil. Mineral oil should be re-applied on a regular basis to enhance the natural patina that the stone will develop over time.
- Depending on how the soapstone is used, a more thorough cleaning may be necessary from time to time. This is especially important in food-preparation areas where sanitation is a concern. To sterilize the surface, a name-brand cleaner such as antibacterial Fantastik or Formula 409 may be used. Use a non-abrasive sponge, rinse with warm water and dry.
- Although soapstone is naturally resistant to staining, it may still become discolored or scratched through regular use. If this is the case, buff the spot with fine, 180-grit sandpaper until the stain or light scratches disappear. Re-sand the spot with extra fine 280-grit sandpaper until it's smooth and matches the rest of the surface, and then clean the area of dust. Once dry, re-coat the entire surface with mineral oil for a clean, uniform appearance.
