How to Clean Mold From Outdoor Cushions

104 31
    • 1). Remove the cushions from the outdoor furniture and shake them out. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove excess debris and dirt from the cushion and the outdoor furniture. Spray the cushions with a spray bottle containing water to trap the mold spores and prevent spreading the mold.

    • 2). Allow the mold to soak for a few minutes before attempting to clean it up. Use a wet vacuum to remove as much of the mold as possible from the cushions. Rinse the cushions to remove loose mold and to view the amount of mold that remains.

    • 3). Mix one gallon water with 1/2 cup bleach and a teaspoon of detergent. Apply a small amount to a hidden area of the cushion with a sponge to check for color fade. Make a new mixture containing color safe bleach if the color fades. Sponge the mixture on the remaining areas of the cushions. Scrub the mixture into the cushion using a stiff bristle brush.

    • 4). Soak the cushions with the bleach solution for 30 minutes to thoroughly kill the mold. Rinse the cushion to remove the large pieces, and scrub it once more, allowing it to soak for an additional 30 minutes. Spray the cushions off, and allow them to air dry or dry in the sun. Use a small brush to remove mold from surrounding wood furniture or other surfaces contaminated by the cushions.

    • 5). Add vinegar to a spray bottle and spray the cushions on a regular basis to prevent mold and mildew buildup. Wipe the vinegar off after ten minutes of soaking. Allow the cushions to dry naturally, or place them in the sun to dry.
