How to Make a Rice Paper Parasol

104 260
    • 1). Cut a circle shape from the rice paper, being careful not to tear it, since it's extremely thin. The larger the circle you make, the larger the parasol will be. Use a round stencil for a more symmetrical circle to trace before cutting it out.

    • 2). Cut a pie-shaped piece out of the circle by cutting an angled slit in it that extends from the outer edge to the center. Then, cut an identical one angling in the other direction about 1/8 of the way down from the first.

    • 3). Fold the circle accordion style starting from one side of the cutout piece to the other to make creases, then unfold and flatten. Bring one side of the circle to the other side to form a parasol shape, allowing the edges to overlap slightly. Glue the edges together where the sides are overlapping.

    • 4). Place glue on the inside of the umbrella near its peak and insert the wooden skewer inside the umbrella, poking it through the peak about 1/2 inch.
