If you are looking for fun and inexpensive art projects for St. Patrick's Day, one of your most useful art supplies can be found in the cereal aisle of your local grocery store. Lucky Charms, the cereal made by General Mills, features tiny colorful marshmallows that can be used for a variety of different arts and crafts projects. When used alongside materials you might already have, you can create one-of-a-kind pieces of art that will help you celebrate this important Irish holiday. - Lucky Charms are best known for the colorful marshmallows that are contained in the box. Though the colors and shapes of the marshmallows have changed over the years, there are always a variety of colors contained in each box. For this first project, children can learn about colors and create their own decorative art by gluing the marshmallows to a piece of paper in a rainbow shape. You can use the rainbow on the front of the Lucky Charms box as a guide, or the students can create their own rainbows. Don't forget to set a leprechaun and a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
- The famous slogan for Lucky Charms cereal is that they are "magically delicious." Have your art students make their very own magic wands out of Lucky Charms cereal. For the wand base, you could either use a stick, paper towel roll or a rolled up piece of brown construction paper. To add interest to the wand, tie paper streamers in the various colors of the Lucky Charms marshmallows. Use a dab of hot glue or plenty of school glue to attach the different marshmallows to the base of the wand and to the colorful streamers.
- The marshmallows contained in this cereal would be perfect additions to a charm bracelet. To make a bracelet out of Lucky Charms cereal, simply cut a piece of yarn so that it can tie comfortably around your wrist. Leave a little extra length so that it will hang loosely. Use a hot glue gun to arrange pieces of marshmallow along the length of yarn. If you are comfortable using a sharp needle and thread, insert a needle into each marshmallow and tie it around your length of yarn. This will allow your marshmallows to dangle like a real charm bracelet. Tie it around your wrist when you are finished.
