    • 1). Park the car on a level surface and wait for the engine to cool if it's been driven recently. Normally it takes about 30 minutes for the engine to cool down completely. Raise the front of the car on a pair of jack stands and make sure it is secure before you slide underneath the vehicle.

    • 2). Get underneath the center of the engine and search for the transmission drain pan. This is a large metal tank surrounded by six bolts. Place the collection pan beneath the drain pan. Remove all but one of the bolts with the 1/2-inch socket wrench and wait 10 to 15 minutes for the fluid to drain completely. Remove the final bolt and lower the remaining fluid into the pan. Wash the drain pan and bolts with soap and hot water.

    • 3). Remove the transmission filter underneath the drain pan by taking off the three bolts with the 3/8-inch socket wrench. Place the new filter on the transmission and fasten it with the old bolts. Replace the drain pan and lower the car from the jack stands.

    • 4). Pop the hood of the vehicle and locate the transmission dipstick above the drain pan. Pull it out and place a funnel into the tube. Pour in three quarts of transmission fluid. Put the dipstick back into the tube. Close the engine hood.
