Winter Activities in Iowa City for Kids
- The West Music (westmusic.com) store in Coralville, a northwestern suburb of Iowa City, hosts the Kindermusik kids music program. This program offers a winter/spring semester for children ages five and under. The semester runs from early February through May. Some of the programs are "Our Time," which is for children ages one to three and includes dancing activities, and "Village," which caters to infants under 18 months old. Each music program provides kids with instruments, story books and CDs. Kindermusik classes occur once a week for 15 weeks; parents may choose which day to enroll their children.
- Kids in Iowa City and its neighboring city, Coralville, have opportunities for hockey games via the Iowa City Youth Hockey Association (iowacitycoralvillehockey.org). This youth hockey league hosts games throughout the winter. In mid-December, the ICYHA hosts its annual Holiday Face Off Tournament. As of May 2011, ICYHA has four teams in its league; each team has 14 players on its roster. Boys and girls may play on teams. All ICYHA sanctioned games are at the Coral Ridge Ice Arena (coralridgeice.com) in Coralville, approximately 20 minutes from downtown Iowa City.
- The Hawkeye Skating Club (hawkeyeskating.org) is a ice skating club for boys and girls in the Iowa City and Coralville area. This club meets on Wednesday nights at the Coral Ridge Ice Arena (coralridgeice.com) in Coralville. Hawkeye Skating Club provides private group or one-on-one ice skating lessons. During the winter, the Skating Club sponsors the annual Holiday Show, an exhibition where Club members are able to showcase their ice skating talents. Rehearsals for this event begin in mid-November to mid-December, when the Holiday Show occurs.
- Children in Iowa City may attend the Aisle of Lights tradition in Coralville. This annual event happens on the second Saturday and Sunday of December and consists of approximately 30,000 paper bags with votive candles and sand that surround the streets of Coralville for two nights. The residents of Coralville are responsible for setting the candlelight bags by the street. Children may help their parents in creating these luminarias.
