Hi, my name's Jessica Delfino. I live here in New York City. I'm part of the craft group called Crafter Math. You can find us at CrafterMath.blogspot.com. And today, we're going to work on a fun, easy, Earth Day themed craft for kids. So, basically in the Spirit of Earth Day, we're going to use materials that are just kicking around the house. We're not going to go out and buy anything new - it's all just stuff we have laying around, right? Stay in that spirit of, you know, reduce, reuse, recycle. So, my materials here are cardboard and paper that I already had in my house. And, this cardboard is just from a box, I just cut a piece off from one of the flaps. Ruler, scissors, marker, and this is some ribbon that I had from a leftover Christmas present. So, basically we're going to take our piece of cardboard, take our ruler and our marker. Start at the bottom of the piece of cardboard, and draw a line up so that it connects. So, we're going to go halfway through our piece of cardboard, which is about, by the way, two inches wide by about eight inches long, and we're going to start in the middle of one side, and go to the middle of the other, just draw a line down at an angle. We're going to do the same thing on the other side. Doesn't have to be perfect, but about the same, just like that. And then, we're going to go not all the way to the top, we're going to go to about, I'd say, about an inch from the top, and make the same kind of a formation, just slanted lines that go up. And then, you can just freehand the knot part, just like so. Okay. Now, we are going to take our scissors and cut along those lines. It's good if you have a nice sharp pair of scissors for this, because it is cardboard, so it's a little thick. You can also do this with card stock, but I like cardboard, because I actually really love working with cardboard in general. You always get a nice solid project. Cardboard is very durable, unlike paper, which tends to fall apart and fray and whatnot. So, there you go. There is your necktie. Now, you're just going to take your piece of paper, you're going to take your marker again, and just kind of quickly do a rough trace around. And then, we are going to cut the paper so that it is going to fit on top. This is going to be our pattern of our necktie. Finally, you're going to use any means possible - if you have glue, if you have tape, if you have whatever you have. I'm just going to use a little glue stick here, and just glue, just put a bunch of glue on your necktie. And, it should fit just about perfectly, since we traced it. There we go. Next, we're going to take this piece of ribbon, put it on the back, use a piece of tape to fasten it on the back, and voila! You have yourself a necktie, you know, for if you got to go to work or whatever. Tie it right on behind you, and then you can feel free to decorate it any way you like. You can put stickers on it, you can put stripes on it. It's your necktie.
