Jiao Gu Lan or Qi Ye Dan or Wu Ye Shen is also known as Sweet tea vine, native to the South western part of mainland China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia. Yunnan has the largest numbers of species. In the investigation of the effect of gypenoside, an active component of the Chinese herb Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thumb) Makino, on human hepatoma cell lines (Hep3B and HA22T) showed that gypenoside inhibited the proliferation or viability of the Hep3B and HA22T cells in a dose-dependent manner, according to "Gypenoside induces apoptosis in human Hep3B and HA22T tumour cells"by Chen JC, Chung JG, Chen LD.(1)
2. Antiproliferation effect
In the investigation of isolatef flavonoids and saponins from Gynostemma pentaphyllum for their antiproliferation effect on hepatoma cell Hep3B, found that saponin fraction, both ginsenoside Rb(3) and ginsenoside Rd dominated fractions were more effective against Hep3B cells than the standards rutin and ginsenoside Rb(3), with the cell cycle being arrested at G0/G1 phase for all the treatments. Additionally, the inhibition effect followed a dose-dependent increase for all the sample treatments, according to "Preparative chromatography of flavonoids and saponins in Gynostemma pentaphyllum and their antiproliferation effect on hepatoma cell" by Tsai YC, Lin CL, Chen BH.(2)
