History and Controversy

• According to technology website Gizmodo, in April 2010 an Apple employee mistakenly left an early prototype of the iPhone 4 in a California bar. Gizmodo purchased the prototype for $5,000. The company then published photos and technical specifications of the device online, prompting lawyers for Apple to issue a much-publicized letter asking that Gizmodo return the prototype. Gizmodo complied. Apple officially released the iPhone 4 on June 24, 2010. It sold more than 1.7 million units in its first three days on the market.

• The iPhone 4 measures 2.3 inches wide, 4.5 inches tall and just under 0.4 inches thick. It weighs 4.8 oz., or 0.3 pounds. It uses an ARM Cortex-A8 processor built on ARMv7 architecture with a clock speed of 1.0 gigahertz (GHz). On-board power for the iPhone 4 comes from a built-in rechargeable 1420 mAh lithium-ion battery. The phone comes with a set of Apple headphones, a USB power adapter and a dock connector.

• Apple outfits the iPhone 4 with a 3.5-inch wide-screen multi-touch display. The display features a native resolution of 960 by 640 pixels and contrast ratio of 800 to 1. The screen features retina display and a typical contrast ratio of 800 to 1. It supports H.264, MPEG-4 and Motion JPEG video formats at varying resolutions. • The iPhone 4 is built around a stainless steel frame. The frame also serves as the phone's antenna. GSM versions of the iPhone 4 are compatible with HSUPA, UMTS and HSDPA networks at 850, 900, 1900 and 2100 megahertz (MHz), as well as with GSM/ EDGE networks at frequencies of 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz.
