    • 1). Drive the Mountaineer's front wheels onto the car ramps to elevate the front end. Brace the left-rear wheel with two wheel chocks to prevent the SUV from rolling off the ramps.

    • 2). Slide under the driver door area with the socket wrench, drain pan, two quarts of Mercon V or XL-12 fluid, funnel, brake cleaner and a rag. Center the drain pan under the drain plug on the front side of the transfer case.

    • 3). Remove the drain plug from the transfer case using the socket wrench. Remove the fill plug from the transfer case with the socket wrench and wait for the old fluid to completely drain from the transfer case.

    • 4). Reinstall the drain plug in the transfer case with the socket wrench. Insert he funnel into the fill plug hole by routing the funnel hose around the driveshaft yoke, and then pour one quart of Mercon V or XL-12 fluid into the transfer case through the fill hole. Pour approximately one third of the second quart in through the funnel until the fluid is almost at the bottom of the fill hole -- you can tell how full it is by inserting the tip of your finger into the hole.

    • 5). Reinstall the fill plug with the socket wrench. Spray brake cleaner on the transfer case in any area where you spilled fluid on the outside and wipe it off with a rag. Climb out from under the Mountaineer.

    • 6). Remove the wheel chocks from the back tire and carefully drive the Mountaineer off the car ramps.
