How to Remove the Front Axle Shaft on a Jeep Wranlger

    • 1). Break the lug nuts loose on the front wheels by turning them 40 degrees counterclockwise with a tire wrench.

    • 2). Engage the emergency brake and raise the Wangler onto jack stands. Lift the front of the Wrangler up using the front crossmember. Place the jack stands under the pinch welds in the front of the vehicle, and lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.

    • 3). Finish removing the lug nuts and pull the wheel off the hub.

    • 4). Remove the spindle nut using an impact wrench and spindle nut socket.

    • 5). Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts, slide the caliper off the rotor and secure the caliper to the coil springs above it using zip-ties.

    • 6). Remove the brake rotor from the hub by pulling it straight off.

    • 7). Pull the cotter pin from the nut in the center of the driveshaft with pliers.

    • 8). Remove the driveshaft nut using the impact wrench.

    • 9). Loosen the tie-rod end bolt using a socket wrench.

      Rotate the steering knuckle and wheel hub out of the way until the axle is free. Then pull the axle shaft out of the wheel hub.

      Pry the other end of the shaft out of the transmission with a flat-head screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the transmission end seal while prying the shaft out.
