Food Treasures of Key West
As an investor with the Mel Fisher Expedition, I get a thrill diving for treasure when I am in Key West.
On my last trip to the Conch Republic, the treasure I found was not on the ocean floor but in several wonderful eating establishments.
My first find was during my morning bicycle ride near the historic seaport district.
Coffee Plantation, located on Caroline Street, is a great way to start the day while having excellent coffee, lattes or juice while catching up on the local or national news via complimentary newspapers or internet time that can be purchased.
The owners are Theo and Diane.
Theo is originally from the Netherlands.
His first business in the U.
S.
was in California where he met Diane.
They have been in Key West now for close to a decade where they have become an integral part of the community.
Be sure to get Theo to tell you about his special talent in the art of bartering.
After coffee, get ready for the perfect breakfast or if you're not a breakfast person, go by for lunch.
At the other end of the island in Bahama Village at the corner of Thomas and Petronia, you will find a quaint little place called LaCreperie.
As the name implies, crepes are the specialty.
Being a Georgia farm boy, I didn't grow up eating a lot of crepes.
But, these are not just any crepes.
The recipes are prepared by a second generation French lady and cooked on an authentic galatoire.
You can have a breakfast crepe made with apples, bananas, chocolate with real whipped cream or an assortment of other tasty fillings or toppings.
If sweet is not your thing, try one with chicken or another meat offering.
Their crepes made with buckwheat are worth having.
On some days you may find a musician performing just outside the café to add to your pleasure.
Yolande, a thirty year resident of Key West, still has her beautiful French accent and loves providing great food, great service and visiting with customers.
This is a must for any visit to Key West.
The food treasure of the evening is a great Italian restaurant right on Duvall called La Trattoria.
It offers an intimate setting, wonderful food and an overall excellent dining experience.
The local yellow tail snapper and the veal are both outstanding.
To cap off the evening and the ultimate food treasure hunt in Key West, it is back to Bahama Village for dessert at a specialty dessert restaurant known as Better than Sex.
Depending on who your partner is, you will have to be the judge.
