How to Change a 2002 Mountaineer Fuel Filter
- 1). Open the fuel door on the Mountaineer and then slowly remove the gas cap to relieve the fuel tank pressure.
- 2). Lift the hood and locate the power distribution center. Remove the cover and identify the fuel pump relay then remove it from the center.
- 3). Start the engine and let it run until it stalls. Make four additional attempts to start the engine once more, but wait five seconds between each try. Do not put your foot on the gas pedal at all during this step because the engine will backfire. After the engine fails to start back up remove the ignition key.
- 4). Remove the negative battery cable from its post with a socket wrench and isolate the cable away from any other metal it may contact.
- 5). Place a wheel block in front of both of the front tires. Both blocks should be firmly in place. Sit down on the ground and then use your foot to kick each of the wheel blocks to jam them under the tires securely.
- 6). Raise the Mountaineer at the rear with a hydraulic jack. Lift the support arms on both of your jack stands 4 inches and then lock both arms at that height.
- 7). Place a jack stand under the frame rail on both sides forward of the rear tires. Then lower the hydraulic jack until the truck completely rest on the jack stands.
- 8). Slide under the truck and locate the fuel filter. A protective shield near the gas tank will cover it. Remove the bolts holding the shield in place on the chassis with a socket wrench. Set the shield and it bolts to the side of the work area for now.
- 9). Place a metal catch pan directly under the fuel filter. This will catch the small amount of fuel that is going to come out of the fuel lines once you remove them.
- 10
Remove the two rear fuel lines first. Pinch together the two small tabs on the quick-connect fitting while pulling the fuel line off the fuel filter. Allow the fuel line to hang and drain any fuel it has in it into the catch pan. Repeat this process and remove the second rear fuel line. - 11
Remove the fuel line at the front of the fuel filter by lifting the 2-inch long latch upward. Place the fuel line disconnect tool around the fuel line and then push it down into the fuel line while pulling the line away from the filter. - 12
Remove the disconnect tool from the fuel line and allow any remaining fuel in the line to also drain into the catch pan. When you install the fuel line on the new fuel filter, the tool is not needed. All three of the fuel lines push back on and click into place. - 13
Loosen the bolt on the support clip holding the fuel filter and then remove the filter from the truck. - 14
Install the new fuel filter by performing the removal procedure in reverse. Tighten the protective shield's bolts to 15 ft-lbs. with a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench. Check the repair for leaks with the engine running.
