    • 1). Shut off all water to the bathtub's faucet either by closing the main shutoff valve in the house or by turning both shutoff valves for the bathtub. Look at the wall behind the bathtub's faucet for an access panel to the tub's shutoff valves, if one is present.

    • 2). Remove the retaining screw from the faucet control handle. Pry the center cap out of place and use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw underneath, or use an Allen wrench to remove the screw at the base of the handle.

    • 3). Unscrew any sleeves or adapter pieces from the spindle assembly, if any are present. Unscrew the escutcheon (protective plate) from the wall, if one is present, and slide it off the spindle.

    • 4). Grab the top of the cartridge assembly using a pair of pliers, then pull it straight out toward you. If the cartridge sticks, rotate it left and right to wiggle it free.

    • 5). Slide the replacement cartridge into place, making sure to line up the notch in the cartridge with the notch in the pipe. Reassemble the other parts in the reverse order you took them apart.
