How to Repair a Broken Sprinkler Line

    • 1). Dig up the ground around the broken sprinkler line using a shovel. Remove 1 to 2 feet of dirt beneath and on both sides of the broken line. Be careful not to cause further damage to the line with the tip of the shovel.

    • 2). Cut out the broken section of sprinkler line with PVC cutters or a hacksaw. Cut out 1 to 2 feet of pipe. The more play or give you have in the line, the easier it is to install a new piece.

    • 3). Measure the length of the broken line you cut. Cut a new piece of line of equal length. Use sandpaper to lightly sand the cut ends of new piece of line and the ends of the line in the ground.

    • 4). Apply PVC primer to both ends of the new section of line and the existing line in the ground. Also apply primer to the insides of two couplings. Allow the primer to dry. The couplings will be used to join the existing line with the new section of line.

    • 5). Place PVC cement inside one end of each coupling. Place PVC cement on the ends of the existing pipe in the ground. Install the couplings by pressing the underground line into the glued end of the couplings and twisting. Let the glue cure for a couple of minutes.

    • 6). Apply PVC cement to the ends of the new section of line and to the open insides of each coupling. Attach the new section of line by inserting it into one coupling at a time. Press the line into the coupling and twist. To install the opposite section of line, you may need to slightly flex the new pipe and the existing pipe. Push the two ends together. Allow all repairs to dry for 15 minutes before turning on the water.

    • 7). Turn on your sprinkler system and check for leaks. If no leaks are present, you can fill in the hole around the sprinkler line and tamp it down with your foot.
