If you just lost your job and your health insurance benefits, you are obviously going to need to look into getting alternative coverage.
This article talks about some of the things you should keep in mind to make the best health insurance choice for your particular situation.
There are several different types of plans you can look at to make your health insurance choice.
The first one, a traditional health insurance plan, is one called an indemnity plan.
This allows you pretty much free choices of doctors, hospitals and other medical care services.
It is the most expensive type of plan to get.
If money is not a problem, this may be the best way to go.
You typically pay for the services you receive directly and are reimbursed by the insurance company.
Sometimes you can assign benefits to your doctor.
There are few restrictions on these plans, but they are expensive.
The most popular health insurance choice is a managed care plan.
These plans try to control the level of medical expenses that a person incurs.
They do have some restrictions on coverage and some rules that you will need to follow.
If you need to be cost conscious, choose one of these plans.
An HMO is the most restrictive plan in the managed care group.
You must choose a primary care physician from an approved list of doctors.
If you have a need to see a specialist, your primary care physician has to refer you to one in the group.
You basically give up your freedom of choice in order to save money.
You will usually not have much in out of pocket expenses and premiums are a lot lower.
A PPO plan is another less restrictive managed care plan.
With this plan you have a choice of doctors within your plan, or you can go outside your network of physicians for care.
If you go outside your network, you will be covered, but at a lower level.
In other words, your out of pocket expenses will be higher.
The POS managed care plan is probably the least restrictive of all the three managed care plans.
It is also the most expensive as far as premium goes.
With a POS you can choice from a list of doctors in the plan or choice one outside the plan.
Most of the managed care plans, except the HMO will have a deductible and some small co-payment.
