How to Replace an Air Conditioning Evaporator Core
- 1). Discharge the air conditioning pressure into an EPA-approved recovery or recycling unit. This can be done at most auto repair shops, dealer service departments or air conditioning repair facilities. Don't attempt this task yourself.
- 2). Remove the heater/air conditioning unit from underneath the dash. In most vehicles, this is located under the instrument panel, or cluster. Turn the unit upside-down and locate the retaining screws that hold together the two halves of the unit. Place these screws in a safe place, such as a magnetic tray, to avoid losing them.
- 3). Take out the center adapter duct to find the last retaining screw and remove that screw as well. Turn the system back over and remove the upper half of the housing. Perform this over a work bench in case you drop the screws or find broken pieces inside.
- 4). Lift the evaporator from the lower housing. Inspect the housing to make sure there is no damage, excessive wear, cracking or missing clips or pieces. Install the new evaporator core by reversing the preceding steps. Check pieces for damage or excessive wear and replace them.
