How to Potty-Train with Candy

    • 1). Offer your child a small candy directly after he uses the toilet, along with a big hug and praise. Explain that from now on, you will give him a small candy after each instance that he correctly uses the bathroom.

    • 2). Size the candy bonus appropriately. A single candy-coated chocolate or single candy corn is appropriate. Large rewards can distract from the achievement and goal of using the toilet properly. Your child should view the small piece of reward candy as a bonus for correct toilet use, not his entire motivation.

    • 3). Build your child's association between the piece of bonus candy and toilet training by giving him that particular candy only after he uses the toilet. Your child may be confused and angry if you give him a few candy pieces after dinner but then refuse him that same candy an hour later. Keep associations clear and reserve his special toilet-training candy for correct bathroom use only.
