How Much Sun Does Pink Muhly Grass Need?

104 9

    Light

    • Pink muhly grass needs full sun. Without at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day, the grass will grow but will not bloom or will bloom poorly. It is a tough plant, thriving even in dry areas that receive hot afternoon sun.

    Culture

    • Muhly grass tolerates most any soil, even wet or sandy soil, as long as it is well-drained. It is drought tolerant and, once established, will not need to be watered. Muhly grass grows naturally in sandy or rock sites, along marshes and in upland forests. It is hardy to -15 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.

    Propagation and Winter Care

    • You can propagate pink muhly grass by gathering the flowers' seeds in late fall or dividing the plant at the roots during late fall or early winter. If you save the seeds, sow them in the spring after the final frost date for your area. Leave the stalks and seedheads on the plant for winter interest, but cut back dead foliage in the spring.
