How to Install Spark Plugs Into a Honda CR-V
- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery after removing the retaining bolt from the cable end with a wrench. Isolate the cable from the battery while you are working.
- 2). Locate the coil cover running down the center of the valve cover and remove the four retaining nuts from it with a socket and ratchet. Set the nuts aside, then lift the cover off the valve cover, exposing the coils underneath.
- 3). Remove the retaining bolts that hold the coils down with a socket and ratchet. Select one coil to start with and disconnect the wiring-harness connector from the coil. Lift the coil straight up and off the spark plug.
- 4). Remove the spark plug by turning it counterclockwise with a spark-plug socket and ratchet. Remove the plug from the cylinder-head bore and discard it. Open the box that contains the new spark plug and carefully remove it.
- 5). Verify the gap between the electrode and the ground on the bottom of the plug. It should be set to .039 with a feeler gauge. The gauge should just slide through the gap with a very slight drag on the blade.
- 6). Install the new plug into the spark-plug bore, turning it clockwise to tighten it with a spark-plug socket and ratchet. Tighten it until it is snug, then turn it one-quarter turn more. Slide the coil over the spark plug and install the coil-retaining bolt with a socket and ratchet.
- 7). Plug in the wiring-harness connector to the coil, then move to the next cylinder and repeat the process. Once you have completed all four cylinders, place the coil cover on the valve cover and install the four retaining nuts, tightening them with a socket and ratchet.
- 8). Install the negative battery cable on the negative terminal of the battery and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Start the engine to test the repair.
