How to Correct a Bowed Wall for Wall Framing
- 1). Place a long straight edge across the studs. A 6-foot level works well, but straight lumber works as well.
- 2). Make a cut with a circular saw at the center point of the bow. Set the blade depth as deep as possible, which will be somewhere around 2 inches.
- 3). Push the stud straight and hammer a 16d sinker into the stud, nailing the slot together, if the bow is bent toward you. If the stud is still bowed, make another slice about 12 to 18 inches below the first cut and drive another nail into the slot. If the stud is curved away from you, pull on the stud with one hand and slip in a wood shim into the slot with the other hand. Use construction adhesive on both sides of the shim to add strength to the repair. You may have to use two shims if the stud is quite bowed. Add another slot if the stud is still bowed.
