Holidays in Mijas, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain
Mijas is located in the province of Malaga and is divided into two distinct areas: the village, which is commonly known as the pueblo - is typical of the traditional Andalucian style of whitewashed buildings. It is carved high into the mountainside overlooking the panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea below. Its charm is authenticated by its donkey treks for foreign visitors and a tap in a wall, which provides natural mineral water. Scour the narrow cobbled streets with archways where geraniums abound from balconies, to shops serving arts and crafts such as wicker and other curios. Restaurants and bars beckon the tourist and their palate with local delicacies such as home-made bread, honey and almond cakes. They also serve other European dishes to cater for the expat community in the area.
However, the still and quietness of the pueblo is sharply contrasted when you turn to its neighbour Mijas Costa. Fifteen minutes drive away, the once sleepy fishing village is now a coast buzzing with sunny beaches from the relative quietness of the coves to beaches alive with adventure. There are water sports abundant: jet skis, water skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing and parapenting. Or you can dip into the sea with a scuba dive or drop a rod and try a little fishing. A quick visit to Fuengirola can charter you a boat and teach you the sailing necessities, and provide you the essential equipment to patrol these coasts.
On dry land, there are excellent golf courses dotted around La Cala including the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, activities such as ballooning, jeep safaris, go-karting and mountain biking. There is also a theme park and a Sealife Centre nearby and if that is not enough there are also multi sports centres, gyms, and fields to take in that game of football. All facilities including the beaches are well provided with equipment to ensure you enjoy your activity to its fullest. Safety and customer service is paramount too; chiringuitos lie in wait at the beaches to satiate the thirst of surfers or bathers alike and some of the beaches are blue flagged to certify their commitment.
Restaurants near the beach serve the freshest fish and seafood and other known international dishes to placate other European tastes. Some of the chiringuitos also stay open to late in the night so you can enjoy watching the setting sun to pleasant music sounding in the background. There are also shops to fulfil that souvenir and gift list.
Malaga airport is approximately 47km away and provides excellent transfer facilities. Cars can be hired too and both of these methods can be arranged in advance through your travel agent or online, which is highly recommended as it takes the hassle out of your journey. Taxis as usual can be picked up outside the airport.
