How to Replace a 2001 3.0 Flex Oil Pan Gasket
- 1). Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. Position the wheel chocks at the front and rear of the back-left tire. Lift the front end of the Ford with the floor jack and support it on two jack stands.
- 2). Slide the drain pan under the 3.0 Flex Fuel's oil pan drain plug. Remove the drain plug with a box wrench and allow the oil to drain into the drain pan.
- 3). Remove the oil pan bolts from the oil pan using the socket set. Pull the oil pan down by hand. You may need to stick the gasket scraper between the pan and the engine sealing surface to loosen it enough to pull it down.
- 4). Remove all the old gasket material from the oil pan and engine block sealing surfaces using the gasket scraper, rags and brake cleaner.
- 5). Apply a thin layer of spray adhesive to the sealing surface on the oil pan and then lay the new oil pan gasket onto the pan. You may need to give the spray adhesive a minute or two to cure before applying the gasket; refer to the spray adhesive's specific directions for this before use.
- 6). Hold the oil pan against the engine block and thread in the oil pan bolts by hand. Tighten the bolts with the socket set, one after another in a criss-cross pattern, moving from one side of the pan to the other to ensure the pan seals properly. Reinstall the oil drain plug.
- 7). Pour 4 qts. of 5w30 engine oil into the oil filler neck. Put the oil filler cap on and start the engine, count to 15 and then shut the engine off. Check the oil level on the dipstick and add oil accordingly until the oil is near the top of the crosshatch on the dipstick.
- 8). Lower the Ford off the jack stands with the floor jack. Remove the wheel chocks and close the hood.
