How to Replace a Timing Belt on a 1994 Pontiac Sunbird
- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable and lay it aside. Do not allow it to touch metal. Jack up the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands. Remove the right front fender inner shield and the lower splash guard using the appropriate sockets.
- 2). Remove the accessory drive belts by rotating the tensioner with a 15 mm socket and lifting the belt off the pulleys. Unbolt the power steering pump, but do not disconnect the power steering hoses. Lay the power steering pump to the side. Remove the timing belt cover using the appropriate sockets.
- 3). Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt using the appropriate socket, then pull the pulley off. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the timing marks are lined up. The timing mark on the crankshaft lines up at the 6 o'clock position and at the 12 o'clock position on the camshaft.
- 4). Loosen the water pump bolts, then turn the pump counterclockwise with adjustment tool No. J33039-A to release the timing belt tension. Remove the timing belt. Check to ensure the timing marks are still lined up.
- 5). Install the timing belt, starting at the crankshaft sprocket, then up the right side of the engine to the camshaft sprocket, keeping the belt tight between the two. Bring the belt down the left side of the engine over the outside of the water pump pulley. Push the belt behind the tensioner.
- 6). Turn the water pump pulley clockwise using the adjustment tool until the tensioner arm touches the high torque stop. Turn the crankshaft clockwise two turns, slowing down on the second turn to ensure that both timing marks are lined up. If the timing marks are not lined up, remove and reinstall the belt.
- 7). Turn the water pump pulley counterclockwise until the tensioner arm holes line up with the base. Tighten the water pump bolts to 18 foot-pounds of torque using the torque wrench. Install the rest of the parts in reverse order of removal. Smear blue threadlocking compound (Locktite 242 or equivlanet) on the crankshaft pulley bolts, screw in and tighten the bolts to 20 foot-pounds of torque.
