Delicious Foods to Make Around the Campfire
Dinnertime in our family is shared around the table every evening.
But dinnertime while we're camping takes on a different dimension.
Prepping and cooking outdoors is an easy, enjoyable activity that can involve the whole family.
What's also great about camping cooking is that the whole meal can be cooked over an open fire leaving less to clean up afterwards.
Keeping it simple and delicious are easy to do when preparing meals for camping.
One of our favourite ways to cook up a delicious and simple meal is to prep some marinated meat and tofu at home before we leave and cook it over the fire with some foil wrapped vegetables that have been lightly buttered and seasoned (we also like to toss in a few garlic cloves for the aroma).
We love foil wrapped potatoes and add those to the fire too.
We usually add some freshly cut raw veggies to the table or a simple salad.
This simple creation is delicious, nutritious and filling.
Clean up is a breeze and everybody is happy to wait a while before making s'mores for dessert.
A few things to remember to make your campfire meals delicious is to get your fire started earlier to allow the fire to die down and get really hot without the rising flames.
This will create a more even heat base and cook your food better.
Depending on the meat you are cooking will determine when to put your veggies on the camp grill.
And potatoes cooked whole take about 30 minutes depending on their size.
Bring up some good quality olive oil (we prefer Spanish varieties), butter, salt and pepper and some of your favourite spices to add flavour to your dishes.
Marinate your meat at home and place in zip lock bags in the freezer.
They will thaw slowly in your cooler and be ready for the grill when you need them.
Another delicious and great smelling campfire meal is breakfast.
Who can resist eggs and bacon cooked over a fire.
(Vegetarians like myself might want to skip the bacon of course).
But cooking up some eggs and toast over the fire not only smells great but tastes even better.
Using heavy-duty pots and pans for some of your cooking is a great way to cook over an open fire.
We keep a set of pots and pans for camping and always bring along our cast iron pans.
They can withstand just about anything and you don't have to worry about them blackening from the fire.
Keeping your campfire cooking simple but delicious is easy to do with a few key ingredients like the ones we've mentioned here.
Be creative, use your spices and enjoy cooking outdoors.
Happy Camping!
