Shopping around for baby's toys may be a very stressful experience. Just look at the myriad of toys displayed on shelves over the kids section and you'll understand. Aside from the fact that babies toys are much expensive than what you expect, you also don't know what toy exactly is fitting for your child's age and development level. However, before anything else, it is your child's safety that you should be more concerned about.

Toys are classified according to babies' age and development stage. When choosing a toy, pick one that is appropriate for your child's abilities. However, you can also choose toys that are 1 or 2 levels advanced. Toys that are behind your baby's skills may be boring while toys that are too advanced may prove risky.

The most common things to watch out for in every toy you purchase are choking hazards. You'll easily recognize toys that are unsafe if they are small enough to fit your baby's mouth. Even if a toy may seem perfect for your child's needs, if it's too small, consider looking for other options. You can say that a toys is safe if it's height and width are both more than 5 inches in measurement.

Similarly, do not consider buying toys that have removable parts in them. Babies do not understand the danger of swallowing small parts so be careful about this one. Make sure that all toy parts are secure and can't easily be disconnected. If you make up your mind to buy a stuffed animal for baby, make sure it doesn't have parts that can be bitten off by baby such as a soft tail, ribbons, and buttons.

Aside from small parts, you should also look out for long strings and cords. Either of these two can easily wrap around an infant's neck and result to strangulation. Best examples of which are toy telephones and toy cars with pulls. Moreover, once your baby learns how to climb or stand, immediately get rid of mobile toys that hang on top of the crib.

It is no doubt that playtime is essential for the growth of a child. That is the reason why you should take it for granted by purchasing toys for your child mindlessly. Pick toys that can offer not only entertainment and fun, but also education and learning as well.
