The Superyacht Eclipse - World’S Largest Yacht to Date
In the world of super and megayachts, size does matter. Luxury and grandeur are the hallmarks of the world's largest superyachts. These majestic ships are like floating cities with everything guests need at hand. The crews of the world's largest superyachts tend to their owners and guests every need.
The world's largest superyacht, the Eclipse, was delivered to Russian businessman Roman Abramovich in December of 2010. It is 163.5 metres long and outranks Sheikh Mohammed's yacht, Dubai, by 0.5 metres. Terence Disdale Design was the designer contracted to design the interior and exterior of the superyacht. Francis Design was the naval architect, and the yacht was built by Blohm and Voss in Germany. The Eclipse had an estimated price tag of $1.12 billion.
The Eclipse has two swimming pools, 24 guest cabins, a disco hall, several hot tubs, and two helicopter pads. It also has three launch boats, and a mini-submarine. The mini-submarine has the capability to submerge 50 metres. It takes about 70 crew members to operate the yacht.
While the comfort of the guests is met with all of the amenities on the superyacht, their safety is paramount. The Eclipse has an intruder detection system, and a German built missile defense system. The owner's suite is protected with armor plating and bullet proof glass. The bridge is also fitted with armor plating and bullet proof glass. The guest's privacy is protected with an anti-paparazzi shield. This is done with lasers that sweep the area and activate a light which shines right into the camera to prevent photographs. Security guards can also activate this system if they detect any professional photographers.
The Eclipse's launch date was June 12, 2009. On September 18, 2009 it arrived at Frederikshavn, Denmark. It was delivered to Abramovich after tests on December 9, 2010. During its first refueling the first pictures were taken of the superyacht in Kristiansand, Norway. The owner made Eclipse available for charters through Super Yachts Monaco, based in Monaco.
The Eclipse joins Abramovich's fleet of four other superyachts which he still owns; Sussurro, Umbra, Luna, and Titan. In June of 2006 he gave Le Grand Bleu to his friend Eugene Shvidler, and sold the Ecstasea in June 2009 to an undisclosed buyer from Egypt. His ex-wife Irina received the Pelorus as part of their divorce settlement in 2009. In 2011 he sold the David Geffen for $300 million.
The Eclipse is still the world's largest superyacht. With the popularity of super and megayachts growing, it is just a matter of time before it becomes the second largest superyacht. Superyachts rival five star hotels, and are the ultimate in luxury and comfort.
