Javelina Hunting in Texas
- Javelina are similar to hogs and somewhat related, but they are in the Peccary family. Javelina have an off-white collar and are smaller, which distinguishes them from their distant relative, the boar. A full-grown Javelina weighs about 100 lbs., are fast and can be aggressive when cornered.
- All Texas hunters 16 years of age and older must have a hunting license. No special permit is required for javelina. In south Texas, the javelina hunting season is year-round. In the northern part of the state, the season is from Oct. 1 through Feb. 27. The limit is two per season. Some counties are closed to hunting.
- More than 50 wildlife management areas around the state allow javelina hunting. Some national parks and state parks allow hunting. Many farmers lease their land for hunting, and guides will take you on a hunting trip.
