How to Remove Pests From a Pasture

    • 1). Remove the livestock from the pasture to completely revamp the pasture and remove the pests. Place them into another pasture, bigger if possible, or separate them so there is more acreage per animal. While removing the livestock, deworm them.

    • 2). Dig or disc the pasture that contains the worst pest infestations and dig deep enough to look for groundhog tunnels. If tunnels exist, fill them in and lay down groundhog traps. Churn old manure into the ground to remove light and air from the pests that live in the manure.

    • 3). Apply appropriate pesticide spray to the pasture as recommended by a local feed store agent. Remove livestock from the pasture before spraying.

    • 4). Dig up the pasture and set out groundhog traps if holes are detected. The traps will eliminate the groundhogs from the pasture.

    • 5). Level the pasture and then seed it. Cover the grass seed immediately with straw to prevent seed from blowing away. Once the grass has fully grown, place the livestock back in the pasture.

    • 6). Check to make sure there is enough room for the animals in that pasture. Leave approximately one to two acres of pasture open to cows and horses, and approximately one acre open to goats and sheep. Overpopulating the pasture causes pests to return.

    • 7). Drag the pasture with a piece of a chain link fence pulled behind a tractor to evenly spread and break up the manure clumps. Mow the grass at the soil level regularly to prevent fly and mosquito infestations.
