Get the most out of your Air Conditioner

Central Air Conditioner systems are very popular in the United States and this is not only due to the fact that they may be eligible for a tax write off, but also due to their efficiency and functionality. Some central units possess higher efficiency ratings than others and their SEER will often range anywhere between 12 and 23. The units with the higher efficiency tend to cost more because they are usually equipped with large 2-stage compressors; however, these units do not cost as much to operate as the lower efficiency units and as such the cost is usually justified over time when compared to the lower efficiency units.

With the 2 stage compressor units, the smaller of the two compressors is often running at a constant pace on days that are not as hot. When the temperature of the room to be cooled becomes hotter than usual, the number 2 compressor will kick into gear to take some of the pressure of the smaller one. In the lower efficiency model that has a single compressor setting usually has one single, but powerful compressor that goes on and off on a cycle.

There are actually two types of compressors that are found in central air conditioner systems, one is a reciprocating compressor which functions similarly to the way a piston in a car functions. The other is a scroll compressor which is more intricate than the reciprocating one. It uses a stationary scroll rather than one that oscillates in order to lock in the vapor in the outermost spaces. After which the oscillation passes on the spaces of vapors to the centre of the scroll (which is always smaller) where they will reach to the required compression level then exit the system.

It was generally assumed that the scroll compressor types tend to be quieter and more mechanically flexible thus making it a lower maintenance compressor. It was also assumed that reciprocating compressors are often used only because they are cheaper for the manufacturers to produce which then makes it cheaper for the consumer. However, a study by the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society which compared both compressors efficiency, came to the conclusion that both are very good compressors, but the reciprocating compressor is a bit more efficient in central air conditioner systems that has a cooling power of one to three tons and the scroll compressors tend to be more efficient in units that provides over 3 tons.

In essence, you do not need to worry about the different types of compressors because both of them works well with the type of unit that they are to be placed in. As a matter of fact, your warrantee is more likely to be up before you ever need it and the standard warrantee for compressors is 10 years.
