Are you looking to drive traffic to your blog? Are you trying to create a loyal group of readers? Do you want to possibly make money while blogging (um, yes please!)?

Well then you've come to the right place.

Being new to blogging, it can help to redefine the meaning of the word itself... Here's what good 'ole Wikipedia has to say about the term:
B L O G

"A blog is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries ("posts") typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first)...

...Although not a requirement, most good quality blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via GUI Widgets on the blogs, and it is this interactivity that distinguishes them from other static websites. In that sense, blogging can be seen as a form of social networking. Indeed, bloggers do not only produce content to post on their blogs, but also build social relations with their readers and other bloggers."
Which brings me to my first point about creating a blog that drives traffic.

1. Create content that provides value to readers.

The object is to write an article that is engaging, interesting, maybe tells a story or two, and is providing readers with tools they can actually use in the real world or online. Part of blogging is creating a following, so by providing value consistently, they will tune in daily to see what you'll have to offer next.

2. Begin with the end in mind, and have an intention before you begin blogging.

What do you want the visitor to do when they read you blog? Do you want them to leave a comment with their thoughts? Do you want them to make a purchase? Do you want them to contact you for more information? Do you want them to subscribe to your blog? Whatever you want the reader to do, TELL THEM TO DO IT! Sometimes people cannot connect the dots themselves, so it will be necessary to spell it out in a nice helpful way.

Planning your blogging strategy will ensure that your audience will do what it is you want them to do, and therefore become a rewarding experience for both the blogger and the reader.

3. Do keyword research before you begin blogging.

Google has a great tool called the Google AdWords Keyword Tool. If you type those words into a search engine (others include Bing, Yahoo, and YouTube) it will bring up this helpful keyword tool.

Think of a topic that the type of person you want to attract would search for. For example, if your desired audience is internet marketers, you may want to write an article about how to get internet marketing leads through blogging, or marketing strategies for the internet. In other words, you can have a sort of sub-topic that people in a certain category would often search for.

The keyword tool tells you what specific phrases people are actually searching for, so this will help you develop a strong title with massive traffic keywords.

4. Lead with VALUE, not a pitch.

If your goal is to have readers buy a product, be a "smooth operator" when it comes to your pitch. You want the majority of your blog to be important information, useful tips or interesting content. Remember, the point of continuing to blog is to build a strong following. You can write a review on a subject to educate your readers, or even tell a story about how you or someone you know was successful in the topic by completing x, y and z.

5. Choose a blogging platform that has excellent SEO capabilities and will rank high on the search engines.

When it comes to blogging, there are many sites to share your valuable content. There's a typical WordPress site that can be completely customized. There's also Blog.com, Blogger.com, TypePadMicro.com, Jux.com, Tumblr.com, and Weebly.com. The only problem with these sites is while they are free, they require hours and hours to set up and customize to match your topics.

When considering a blogging platform that has convenient built-in SEO, you should check out the Empower Network Blogging System.
