Dark hair can be sultry and exotic. Whether your hair is naturally black, or you have dyed it black, you may want to change up your look. It can be difficult to color black hair; in order to drastically change the color, you will likely have to bleach it first. However you can add subtle tones to black hair without bleaching it. - Add multi-tonal highlights throughout your black hair. This adds visual interest to black hair. Keep in mind that in order to lighten the hair, the hair colorist will need to use bleach. So that the highlights are subtle, keep them within two shades of the black hair. For example, add highlights in a medium, chestnut brown and maybe even a burgundy brown. This adds shine and shimmer to your black hair.
- Add some vibrancy to your black hair by tinting it a dark auburn color. The nice thing about this choice is that you likely won't need to bleach your hair too much unless the color does not lift easily. All over color in a deep burgundy or auburn will look like a sheen over black hair. When this color is applied over black hair, it is subtle in regular lighting. However, in the sun, it's bright and eye catching.
- A wild look for black hair is to color the ends of the hair a different color. Try black hair with 3-inch tips that are purple, blue or red for an unusual and fun look. This is probably most appropriate if you are young or are in a creative work environment. In order to color the tips of the hair, it must be bleached first.
