"Pitch Perfect 2" Costume Designer Sal Perez Reveals Secrets From Set

When a movie comes along that's as lovable as Pitch Perfect, a cult following tends to be established pretty quickly. Not only did it do wonders for Rebel Wilson and Anna Kendrick's careers, but there was some pretty fun fashion going on. We turned to the main man himself, costume designer Salvador Perez, to find out what we can expect to see in the sequel and what every high school grad should pack for college.

Kelli Acciardo: How will the fashion be different in the sequel than in the first movie?

Salvador Perez: In the first film, the girls were college freshman—just out of high school—and figuring out who they were. Now, they're college seniors, so there is more maturity and confidence in who they are and their performance clothes are out of this world.

KA: How is each girl's style different?

SP: Each of the girls are so different. Beca would never wear mixed prints the way Lily does, and Chloe is the most sophisticated of the group, but they have all been inspired by each other as they have been together over the years in the story.

KA: Any favorite memories from working the cast on the first film?

SP: During the first film, it was a little movie about the A capella world. Now, it's the sequel to a huge hit movie, so we can't really hang out in public in Baton Rouge as easily because the girls get mobbed. We even had paparazzi on set the first day of shooting, but it's so great getting to work with everyone again—it's like a family reunion.

KA: Who was the most fun to dress?

SP: Finding odd combinations for Lily is always fun and I really like creating Beca's rockstar style.

KA: What should every girl invest in for summer?

SP: It's summer—show off your tan in a great pair of shorts and wedges with a tank or t-shirt, or summery blouse.

KA: Any other trends you're loving this season?

SP: Summer is always about color and this summer it's all about coral and aqua. I have to watch myself because with 11 actresses ... I can't have 2 of them in the same color in the same scenes.

KA: What are some uniquely cool gifts for grads?

SP: I'm loving the Casio Baby G line of watches—they come in so many great colors, so go with a bold color to make it fun for your fashion friends. I also love big statement necklaces worn with jeans and a t-shirt. For your artsy friends, go vintage shopping and find them something unique—a vintage fedora, jewels, etc. For your pop culture-obsessed friends, think outside the box—get them a new app for photos like VSCO Cam or Squareready.

KA: For the high school girls that are graduating, what's your advice for transitioning your style and getting ready for college?

SP: I think all wardrobes should be mix-and-match. To really make full use of your wardrobe, a basic white cotton blouse can be worn with a suit to work, and can also be chic paired with denim and a colorful belt for a fun casual look. It's about having a versatile closet, so you are always prepared for whatever event comes up—work or casual. Buy great basic pieces you can dress up or down.

KA: Rebel Wilson owns her curvy figure and we love her for that—what are some of your favorite plus-size fashion lines?

SP: They recently relaunched the line Eloquii, it's plus-size, but really fashion-y and young. I got quite a bit of clothes for Rebel's character, and I love the fit and style of NYDJ denim.

KA: Any other tips for dressing curvy girls?

SP: I really believe knits are a curvy girl's best friend, but they should be fitted to your bod—not be tight. Get a size up and have darts put in to shape to your body. You should look sleek and well put together, not bulging out of the seams.
