How & Where to Volunteer in SF at the Holidays & All Year
< Continued from page 1
The Food Bank supplies groceries to neighborhood food pantries and ingredients to Glide, St. Anthony’s, Project Open Hand and other organizations that serve hot meals. Its volunteers do the work of 70 full-time employees, it says. Most help handle the tons of food that move through the bank's Potrero Hill and Novato warehouses each week--sorting donations, repacking bulk food, assembling boxes of groceries to be distributed, stocking shelves. The process is a well-oiled machine that doesn’t require much training or orientation; volunteers dive in on their first day.
Shifts are available on weekdays, evenings and weekends, and on weekends, children as young as age 4 can pitch in. More »
For 28 years, puppies and kittens have found homes by simply being their adorable selves in Macy's holiday windows in Union Square. In 2013, Macy's window fans broke records by adopting more than 340 animals and contributing more than $100,000 to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. But the critters there and the SF SPCA need volunteers to greet and guide the spectators through January 4, 2015. More info: contact windowsvolunteer@sfspca.org or (415) 522-3523.More »

If you’re a kid at heart, you might like helping in the children’s playroom; playroom assistants are screened, interviewed and asked for a six-month commitment. The center also welcomes volunteers to help with special events, cook meals and lend IT, marketing, graphic design, photography and other skills.More »12. SF-Marin Food Bank
