Taurus CV Joint Removal
- The Ford Taurus' CV joint is located directly behind the wheel hub. To access the CV joint, the wheel, brakes and wheel hub must be removed. The CV joint and boot are connected to a section of the axle, and are all three considered one component. Removing and replacing the CV joint means also replacing part of the front axle.
- Since its introduction in 1985, the Taurus has had front disc brakes as standard equipment. Start by using the tire jack to lift the Taurus and place a jack stand under the frame near the wheel well. Lower the tire jack and the Taurus will sit very stable. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
Removing the disc brake is not complicated. Just use an Allen wrench to remove the bolt holding the caliper bracket. Remove the bracket with the caliper. The disc rotor will slide right off the wheel hub. Use a socket wrench to remove the six-sided bolt in the middle of the hub, and it will also come off. Behind the wheel hub is the CV joint. - To remove the CV joint and the axle segment, you will need a CV joint puller. This tool is two long feet with angled "feet" at each end and a threaded bolt in the middle. Place the puller over the CV joint and the feet against the flange where the axle is inserted with the threaded bolt screwed all the way out.
When you turn the bolt, the end will push against the CV joint. The feet will brace against the flange and the axle will slowly slide out as the distance between the bolt and the feet diminishes. After just a few turns, the axle will be free and you can pull it out with your hands.
