Tips on Cleaning a White Canvas Tent

104 47

    Preparation

    • Set up the tent in a sunny, grassy area. Close all windows and doors. Firmly anchor the tent. Brush dirt or debris from the canvas with a broom or soft-bristled brush.

    Stain Treatment

    • Treat any mildewed areas with a solution of 2 cups of bleach to 5 gallons of water. Apply this solution and work into the canvas with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse with the water hose. Treat other stains with a laundry stain remover. Remove sap by scraping gently with a dull knife or plastic scraper.

    Cleaning

    • Dilute a mild detergent made for hand-washing fabric in warm water in a bucket. Follow detergent directions. Scrub the canvas with this detergent solution and a soft-bristled scrub brush. Rinse thoroughly with a water hose.

    Waterproofing

    • Washing a tent removes any previous waterproofing treatment. If you want to keep your tent from leaking in the rain, apply a canvas waterproofing solution. Follow the manufacturer's directions and spray or brush on the waterproofing. Many of these solutions also make the fabric more stain-resistant, meaning you can go longer in between washings.

    Drying

    • Allow the tent to dry completely before you take it down and store it. Never pack a wet tent, as this will encourage mildew and rotting.
