    • 1). Cut a 2 x 4 in half. Lay out the other two treated 2 x 4 x 8s and put one half of the cut 2 x 4 at each end so that you have a rectangle. Screw them together and use the square to check the corners. This is your frame.

    • 2). Cut four 44 1/2-inch lengths of your 2 x 4 studs and attach to the base of the frame at each corner. You now have what looks like an upside down table.

    • 3). Cut two pieces that are 41 inches long then screw them to the ends of the "table" legs so that you now have two squares on either side of the structure.

    • 4). Attach two 2 x 4 x 8 studs to the top runners. You should now have a 4 x 4 x 8 framework. Cut three lengths from your studs -- two that are 41 inches long and one that is 45 inches long. The 41 inch ones are to brace the two sides; the 45-inch piece goes across the top.

    • 5). Cut two 24-inch boards and two 33.5-inch boards from your studs to make the door. Cut a 17-inch piece from your studs to be the center brace. Use scrap from your cuts to make the corner braces for the door. Once the frame is constructed, hang the door leaving a 1/4-inch gap because an eighth of an inch will be taken up by the hinges.

    • 6). Place blocks or shims to keep the door in place to install the hinges. Make sure the gaps at the bottom and the top of the door are even. Place the hinges where you want and trace an outline. Cut away enough of the wood until the hinge is flush with the surface of the door. Screw the hinges in and remove the shims.

    • 7). Staple chicken wire on the front half of the structure from the center bracing forward. Cut the door free so it will open and close.

    • 8). Cut two 48-inch boards and install them on top of the center brace to give elevation to the front of the roof. Cover the back half of the structure using four 3/8 x 4 x 4 sheets of plywood. Cover the roof with 3 sheets of 6-foot long metal by screwing the roofing to the 2 x 4s.

    • 9). Install a horizontal wooden rod inside the coop for the chickens to roost and a latch to keep the door closed. Use wood shavings and a box for the chickens to nest in. Paint the plywood if you choose.
