How to Make a Belly Dance Costume
- 1). Fold the satin fabric in half and cut it into two equal-sized pieces. Sew around the raw edge of both pieces of fabric using an overcast stitch. Match the fabric pieces inside out, and sew down the length on each side halfway down. The portion that is sewn all the way will become the top portion of your skirt. Make a waistband by folding the top portion of the fabric so there is a tube to insert elastic. Sew this down, leaving an inch unsewn to insert the elastic. Cut the elastic to fit your waist and insert into the waistband. Either tie off the end of elastic or hand-sew it closed, then sew the waistband shut. Hand-sew a design onto the skirt if you like.
- 2). Sew around the raw edge of the chiffon with an overcast stitch. Fold the raw edge half an inch and sew with a zigzag stitch; this will prevent fraying. Trim the edges of the veil or add hand-sewn designs to the fabric.
- 3). Cut the straps off the bra and set aside. Hand-sew the metallic fabric onto the bra, and then do the same with the bra straps. Sew the straps back onto the bra. Sew the 6-inch fringe from the start of one bra cup to the end of the other bra cup. Hand-sew sequins onto the top portion of the fringe. Sew six sew-on crystals anywhere on the front portion of the bra.
- 4). Measure your hips and cut the felt to your hip measurement. The felt should be around 5 inches in width. Cut as many equal pieces as you can. Stack the felt pieces into two equal stacks. Machine-sew each stack on the raw edge; this will become your belt base. Cover each piece of felt with the remaining metallic fabric and sew with a straight stitch or hand sew. Hand-sew the 12-inch fringe to the bottom edge of each piece of belt base. Sew securely, and then sew the remaining sequins onto the top portion of the chainette fringe. Sew the remaining sequins directly onto the belt base in any design you want. Hand-sew the clasps onto both ends of each belt base and try on the belt to ensure proper fit. If the belt is too big, resew the clasps farther into the belt base to ensure a proper fit.
- 5). Check the entire costume for loose seams and proper fitting. Add more crystals or other sew-on jewels or coins for a flashier costume.
