How To Choose A Strawberry Plant
Home grown strawberries are among the most amazing fresh fruits in the garden. The purpose of this handout is to introduce you to the essentials to "backyard success."
Plant strawberries in the sunniest area of your garden. They require full sun for most of the day, although some late afternoon shade is tolerable in midsummer. We often recommend laying plastic over the top of the mounds to keep the plants free of weed and soil warm. Good water drainage is essential, so planting on mounded rows works well. Prepare the bed by mixing Master Nursery Gold Rush Planting Mix into top 6" of soil at 1 bag per. 25 sq. ft. Mix Master Nursery Master Start Fertilizer into soil blend at about ¼ cup per plant.
You will want to space plants 14" to 18" apart in rows 18" to 24" apart. Position the roots so that they are straight down into the ground. Do not allow them to curl up. Pack the amended soil around each plant taking care not to disturb the proper depth. Be sure the crown of each plant is above the soil level to prevent rot. Water in well and continue to irrigate as needed.
EVERBEARING: produce fruit early summer and then again in the autumn.
Quinault- Extremely productive favorite. Yields medium sized berries. Abundant in April though the fall.
Ozark Beauty- large, sweet berries which are excellent for freezing. Plants are very productive.
Selve- Day neutral variety that produces firm, flavorful berries throughout the summer months.
Tristar- Day neutral variety that is a productive, hardy, vigorous plant. Sweet, good flavored berries.
Sequoia- Very large. Medium red color. The sweetest and most popular strawberry. #1 recommended variety for back yard use.
Strawberries are among America's favorite fruit. Pound for pound, they have more vitamin C than oranges. We wish you luck growing them and encourage you to email me should you have any questions.
