    Size

    • On average, male alligators tend to be slightly larger than female alligators. While males typically measure between 10 and 15 feet in length, females usually measure around 8 or 9 feet.

    Mating

    • Alligators mate during the spring in shallow water environments. Alligators become sexually mature when they reach six feet in length. Male alligators often circle the female before mating with her.

    Gender

    • The gender of alligators is determined by the temperature of the eggs. Temperatures between 90 and 93 degrees Fahrenheit will produce males. Temperatures between 82 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit will produce females.

    Territory

    • Male alligators tend to occupy larger territorial areas than female alligators. Males usually inhabit territories of more than two square miles. In the breeding season, both genders will increase their territorial ranges.

    Parenting

    • Female alligators can lay up to 90 eggs. While male alligators do not participate in rearing their young, female alligators protect their young fiercely.
