Indoor houseplants are a simple and inexpensive way to add color, beauty and a touch of the outdoors to your home. The temperature, humidity and lighting conditions found in your home play a large part in the success or failure of houseplants. There are a wide variety of attractive and easy-to-maintain plants that thrive when grown indoors. Choose plants that are best suited for the growing environment found in your home.

    Heart-Leaf Philodendron

    • One of the more popular indoor plant choices for the home or office is the heart-leaf philodendron (Philodendron scandens oxycardium). This moderate-growing plant does well in the low-light that is often found in homes. The dark green, heart-shaped leaves of the philodendron are susceptible to leaf burn if the plant is placed in direct sunlight. Place the plant in a hanging basket or put the container on a shelf where the leaves have room to spill over the edge. Water the heart-leaf philodendron thoroughly when the soil becomes slightly dry.

    Spider Plant

    • Known for its rapid growth rate, the spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is an easy-to-grow houseplant. Its long, light green leaves, striped with cream or yellow, make the spider plant a good choice for a hanging basket. The spider plant produces plantlets that can either be left on the plant or removed and used to start new plants. Place the spider plant in bright, filtered sunlight; it is prone to leaf scorch if exposed to full, mid-day sun. Allow the soil of your spider plant to dry out before you water it again.

    Peace Lily

    • The peace lily is one of the few houseplants that is able to produce a blossom when located in poorly lit areas of a room. Although the plant will survive low light conditions, it thrives when placed in an area where it receives bright, filtered light. Do not expose the peace lily to full sunlight or it will suffer leaf burn. The plant has dark-green, glossy leaves and the flower is a creamy white and is slightly fragrant. Peace lily prefers moist soil, but allow the soil to dry out between each watering.

    Dumb Cane

    • The dumb cane (Dieffenbachia maculata) can cause irritation and relatively mild allergic-type reactions in children and pets if chewed on, and should therefore be kept well out of reach. Its leaves are large and are mostly white with a dark-green edge. The dumb cane plant tolerates a moderate amount of light and should be allowed to dry out between each watering.
