Construction Parts of a Camper Trailer
- The camper frame uses lumber and is attached directly to the trailer. Most trailer frames are built using 2-by-2 lumber, but different manufacturers will vary the size. The frame is basically a base to build the exterior and interior around. The lumber in most camper frames is connected with framing nails, and metal brackets are added to reinforce the structure.
- The exterior of the camper is constructed using metal siding or fiberglass. Trailers with metal siding will attach plywood sheets to the exterior of the frame before adding the siding. The plywood creates a smooth base for the metal siding. It also creates a surface for the sheet metal screws to grab. Before the siding is attached, a layer of water barrier is added to the plywood to create a waterproof camper.
- The interior is constructed by framing furniture and cabinets. The interior framing will also separate rooms and shape the floor plan. The interior requires the same 2-by-2 boards, wood cabinet faces and furniture faces, door hinges, doors and carpet for the flooring. Shaping the interior requires precision cuts and a plan that involves storage, power and appliances. As the interior comes together, PVC pipes and holding tanks are added for the plumbing and conduit is installed for electricity.
- Accessories include luxury and necessary items. You will cut a hole in the roof and add a vent for air circulation and install the stainless sink, plastic shower, composting toilet, refrigerator, stove and microwave. You will also add a generator to the interior or solar panels to the roof. The power source is connected to batteries that are stored somewhere in your interior plan. The battery system requires a charge controller and inverter to control the power system.
