Helmets and Safety
I believe that everyone who participates in any sport should wear the appropriate helmet designed for this sport.
I'm a firm believer in this.
Once, the right helmet saved my life.
I ride horses.
Years ago, I was riding a horse that was galloping quickly.
I don't know the exact speed but I would say it was going around forty miles per hour.
The horse threw me and I landed on my back, and the back of my head hit a rock.
Well, the back of the helmet on my head hit a rock.
Thank heavens for that helmet.
Even wearing it, I was knocked out.
That's a bad hit, if you still lose consciousness from the blow through a helmet.
I am convinced that if I had not been wearing the helmet the blow would have killed me.
As it was, the fall hurt me pretty badly, but at least I survived it.
It's critical that you choose the proper helmet for your sport(s).
I was wearing a riding helmet when the horse threw me, thank heavens.
A bicycle helmet might have been better than nothing but would not have been as useful as the helmet designed to protect you in the event a horse throws you.
For every sport the mechanics of the injuries possible differ.
I maybe could have gotten away with wearing a motorcycle helmet, but then again it is a bad idea to walk up to a horse wearing something new and strange.
Horses are "neophobic," meaning they are afraid of things that are new.
If you walk up to a horse wearing a strange, huge helmet, the horse may panic and react badly.
After you choose the correct helmet, you need to adjust the fit.
Most helmets are customizable with foam inserts.
You use these inserts to make the helmet fit properly.
If you aren't experienced in making helmets fit, find someone experienced in your sport and ask t hem to help you choose and customize the right helmet for your protection needs.
Everyone, child and adult, should wear helmets while participating in sports.
Helmets should not be made to seem like they are a "kid thing.
" If adults wear helmets too and the kids see this they are more likely to understand that helmets are necessary for everyone for safety and to continue wearing helmets into adulthood.
Helmets can be distracting when they are fastened, but you need to fasten yours anyhow.
If you are in a mishap, you don't need the helmet flying off of your head.
If the helmet doesn't stay on, it doesn't do you any good.
