Food Safety While Camping

104 27

    Packing Food

    • Make sure that food that needs to be refrigerated is packed in the cooler and that there is still ice in the cooler. Also be sure to keep raw food separate from food that isn't raw.

    Cleanliness

    • It is important to keep everything clean. Clean your hands before and after handling any food, especially raw meat. Bringing some disposable wipes is the best way to clean your hands.

    Clean Water

    • Don't use any water from rivers or lakes. Bring bottled water or tap water from home to make sure you have clean water. If you must use some other type of water, then clean the water by boiling it first.

    Dry Foods

    • If your trip is going to be longer than a day, then food that needs to be refrigerated is fine for the first day. After that, you'll need some shelf-stable foods such as peanut butter, canned goods and beef jerky.
