How to Use Grolier's America the Beautiful

    Access the Database

    • 1). Log on to the computer at your public library site. Go to the kids' page and click on the "Homework Helpers" section. Click on the "Database" section

    • 2). Go to Grolier's Online. Find the Social Studies Database. Select "America the Beautiful."

    • 3). Type the name of a specific state, like Oregon, to use the "Browsing by State" feature. It will find a ton of information on Oregon's history, state parks, forests, famous Oregonians, landmarks and much more.

    • 4). Click the Exploring Tabs (Almanac, Profiles, Timelines, U.S. Topics) to find lists of people and places from several different states.

    • 5). Use FIND IT FAST! search to locate something specific like a picture of the White House or the Washington Monument.

    Explore Maps and Interactive Games

    • 1). Select a specific state on the map of the U.S. and click to open it. There will be an introduction page. On the bottom of the page you will find links to seven other maps for that state. They are: Cities and Routes, Exploration, Geopolitical, Historical, Parks and Forests, Population Density and Topographical.

    • 2). Click on "Maps and Media" in the lower right corner of the State module. It will open in a new window and list all maps and pictures for the state selected.

    • 3). Move your mouse around the map. Notice the links marked by a hand. These are hot links; you can click on them to get related information.

    • 4). Click on the "Games" tab to test your knowledge of State Capitals. Select "Capital Game" at the bottom of the list. To play, click on the state abbreviation you think is the correct answer to the question. Click "OK." The map will display a star on the state where the capital is found.
