October 2002: Get Ready for National Pharmacy Week
The theme of this year's National Pharmacy Week, October 20-26, 2002, is "Know Your Medicines, Know Your Pharmacist." The celebration provides an opportunity for you to communicate with your patients, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals about the role you play in patient care. What better way to prepare for this than to take advantage of a few of the features on Medscape Pharmacists?

Medscape Pharmacists has just posted the first column in a new series, Food and Drug Administration Approvals. It will post as a regular monthly column covering recent FDA drug and biological product approvals and significant product labeling changes. Keep an eye out for it on the "Featured on Medscape Pharmacists" section of the Pharmacists home page.

What do you have planned for National Pharmacy Week? Do you have suggestions for activities your colleagues can try in their own communities, or could you use some ideas yourself? Or do you just want to discuss some of the issues this year's theme brings to mind? Start a discussion on our pharmacists-only discussion boards, or join an ongoing one. Here is a refresher on how to access the Pharmacists Discussion Boards:

  • On the Pharmacists home page, click on the "Discussions" tab along the blue bar at the top of the page. It will take you to the Discussions directory page -- bookmark it for future use!

  • From there, you can click on any of the featured discussions to read the previous messages and join in, or click on the "more" button on the upper right-hand side of the page to go to the full list of current discussion folders on the Pharmacists Discussion Boards page.

  • Once you are on the Pharmacists Discussion Boards page, just click on any of the folders to view the list of discussions inside. Here, you can either start a new discussion -- click on the orange "Add Discussion" button at the bottom of the page -- or join a current discussion by clicking on its title, filling out the text box at the bottom of the page, and clicking the orange "Post My Message" button below the text box. After you have posted a message, be sure to check back frequently to keep the discussion going!

If you are not finding answers on the discussion boards and you have a question that requires expert attention, go to the Discussions directory page to find the "Submit a Question" link for the new Pharmacotherapy and Pharmacy Practice Ask the Experts feature. Here, you can fill out a form to submit your question. Questions will be reviewed and selected to go to an expert in the question's topic area.

If accepted, the question and the expert's response will be posted on both the Pharmacists home page (look for it in the "Featured on Medscape Pharmacists" section as well as the "Discussions" section) and on the Discussions directory page. As promised last month, we are officially launching the feature this month. We will be posting the first 2 questions and responses this week.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about what you see on the site or wish to suggest a new program that you would find useful, please feel free to email me at Pharmacisteditor@webmd.net. If you are experiencing technical difficulties, please contact our customer support staff at medscapecustomersupport@ms.medscape.com.
