      Rio Frio, Texas, is located off U.S. Highway 83 at the FM 1120 crossing, parallel to the 200-mile long Frio River. Rio Frio is not considered a town in the conventional sense because it does not have its own government and, therefore, is considered an unincorporated community. Historically, the town was settled by previous residents of the nearby town of Leakey between 1856 and 1860. Though the population has never exceeded 75 people, the area around Rio Frio is teaming with recreation enthusiasts, attracting campers, fishermen and hikers.

    Yeargan's River Bend Camp

    • Yeargan's River Bend Camp has 23 tent, RV, and camp-trailer campsites that are primarily in the shade and are limited to eight persons. The camp, which is gated at night, is located just off of Highway 83 on the banks of the Frio River.

      Campsite features include tables, lights, potable water and a grill. The campground includes six roofed and screened-in picnic areas, which allow campers to grill in any weather and without bothersome bugs. The campground also offers visitors six semi-furnished kitchen and bath cottages for a maximum of six people. The cottages offer heating and air-conditioning.

      The campground includes a convenience store and gift shop, where campers can restock camping supplies and buy souvenirs. Reservations with a deposit are required five days prior to stay. Check in and check-outs are at noon.

    Garner State Park

    • Garner State Park is a gated recreational area comprised of 1419.8 acres, 10 of which are along the Frio River. The area is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

      The park offers 132 campsites with water hookups, 213 campsites with water and electric hookups with either 30- or 50-amp service, 37 roofed and screened-in shelter areas and 17 six-person cabins. The park also offers five screened-in shelter areas with bunk beds that can sleep up to eight people.

      The campground has several camp conveniences, which include restrooms with showers, dump stations, laundry facilities, a miniature golf course and paddle boat, kayak and inner tube rentals.

    Frio Falls Retreat

    • The Frio Falls Retreat is located just off Ranch Road in Rio Frio, beside the Frio River, and offers visitors six full-hookup campsites with 20-, 30- and 50-amp service. The campground features restrooms and barbecue pits.

      It also offers semi-furnished cabins that sleep up to eight people with kitchens, ovens, stove-tops and refrigerators with freezers. Reservations and deposits are required.

    4J Riverway Camp

    • 4J Riverway Camp offers campers 12 full-hookup 30-amp campsites near the Frio River. Each campsite includes water, sewer, picnic tables and barbecue pits with a grill. The camp also offers 13 cabins that sleep from four to eight people.

      The campground has restrooms with showers, a dump station, a convenience store and gift shop, where campers can rent tubes and purchase other items for water activities. Activities at the camp include volleyball, horseshoes, fishing and tubing. The campground is within driving distance of several museums, restaurants and shopping.
