How to Replace a 1985 Ford LTD Brougham Fuel Filter
- 1). Park your car in a level surface and away from appliances with open flames. Disconnect the ground (black) battery cable using a wrench.
- 2). Install a fuel pressure gauge to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. Open the gauge valve to drain the fuel in the line into a proper container to relieve the fuel pressure in the system.
- 3). Raise the rear passenger side wheel/tire assembly off the ground using a floor jack, and support it with a jack stand under the frame. Apply the parking brakes. Chock the front wheels.
- 4). Locate the fuel filter on the frame rail in front of the fuel tank on the passenger side. Remove the hairpin clips from the fuel line fittings attached to the fuel filter. Slightly squeeze both legs of the clip and push it into the fitting. Grab the back tab of the clip and work it out of the line fitting. Pull the fuel lines off the filter.
- 5). Unscrew the filter holding clamp to release the filter off the rail using a standard screwdriver.
- 1). Install the new fuel filter on the holding clamp with the arrow on the filter pointing to the line going to the engine. Tighten the clamp with the screwdriver.
- 2). Install the new hairpin clips that came with your filter on the inlet and outlet fuel lines that connect to the filter. Make sure the clip legs go all the way through the mounting holes, and lock them on the outside of the line retainers.
- 3). Coat the fuel filter line nipples with new engine oil. Push the line fittings against the filter nipples until the hairpin clips snap in place. Slightly pull on the line fittings to make sure they are locked in place.
- 4). Connect the ground (black) battery cable using the wrench. Turn the ignition key to the on position to pressurize the fuel system. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks at the filter. Turn off the engine and lower the vehicle.
