How to Convert VHS Video to DVD

    • 1). Connect the VCR to the DVD recorder. This is typically accomplished by connecting a coaxial cable to the "TV Out" port on the VCR and the "Cable In" port on the DVD recorder, though depending on the models of VCR and DVD recorder you are using, other methods, such as RGB component cables, may be used instead.

    • 2). Turn on the TV, VCR and DVD recorder. Set the TV station to the correct channel to view what is being recorded by the DVD recorder; this may vary depending on your recorder and how it is connected to the TV. As the recorder receives its input from your VCR or VCP, any VHS tape you play should appear on the TV. This allows you to confirm that the DVD recorder is receiving the VHS input properly.

    • 3). Insert the VHS tape you wish to convert to DVD into the VCR or VCP. If the tape attempts to play automatically, press the "Stop" button to stop it and rewind it if necessary. Open the DVD tray in the DVD recorder and insert a blank DVD+R or DVD-R disc and then close the DVD tray.

    • 4). Press the "Record" button on the DVD recorder and the "Play" button on the VCR. The DVD recorder will record the signal it receives in real time so that the video playing from the VHS tape will be recorded to DVD.

    • 5). Stop both the DVD recorder and the VCP/VCR after recording is finished, finalizing the DVD you've recorded if your DVD recorder requires a separate finalization step. Eject the DVD and VHS tape, rewinding the VHS tape beforehand if necessary.

    • 6). Insert another VHS tape and a blank DVD if you have additional cassettes you wish to convert. If you do not wish to convert any other tapes at this time you may disconnect the VCP or VCR from the DVD recorder.
